Computer Science Scholarships

The Department of Computer Science offers several scholarships for students studying in the department:

The application deadline for these scholarships is January 15. Scholarship awards will be announced by April 1.

To apply for any of these scholarships, complete a department scholarship application and submit it to the Department of Computer Science. Also, be sure to have completed the UNI Scholarship Application.

Gary and Mindy Scholten Computer Science Scholarship

Two scholarships up to $2000 are given through the generosity of Gary and Mindy Scholten. Gary is a computer science alumnus of UNI and the CIO of The Principal Financial Group, a Fortune 500 financial services company headquartered in Des Moines.

Requirements:

  1. a full-time freshman or sophomore with a major in the Department of Computer Science
  2. preference to students in groups underrepresented among computer science graduates
  3. preference to students with an interest in building a career in the state of Iowa

This scholarship is renewable for 3 years or until graduation provided student maintains a 3.00 GPA.

The primary goal of this scholarship is to attract new students to computing and help them succeed in the major.

Carl and Wanda Wehner Computer Science Scholarship

Scholarships of up to $1500 are given through the generosity of Carl Wehner, who was a long-time computer science instructor at UNI and one of the founders of the program, and his wife Wanda, who was a long-time instructor of chemistry.

Requirements:

  1. a full-time a junior or senior with a major in Computer Science or Computer Information Systems who shows outstanding promise
  2. an overall and departmental G.P.A. of 3.00 or above
  3. must have completed at least one CS 2000-level course that counts toward the major
  4. preference to students who demonstrate financial need

No award will be made if there are no suitable applicants.

Jesse Purdy Memorial Scholarship

A scholarship of up to $1000 is given in memory of Jesse Purdy, a Computer Science student at UNI from 1996 to 1997.

Requirements:

  1. a full-time sophomore, junior, or senior with a major in Computer Science
  2. an overall and departmental G.P.A. of 3.00 or above
  3. preference to students interested in networking

This scholarship is renewable for 3 years or until graduation provided student maintains a 3.00 GPA.
