  1. For your favorite football team (other than UNI), find the roster on the web and download it into a spreadsheet (include a copy of the spreadsheet).
  2. Calculate the mean, median, midrange of the weights; which provides the best description of the location of the weights (and why)?
  3. Calculate the range, variance, standard deviation, and inter-quartile range of the weights; which provides the best description of the spread of the weights (and why)?
  4. If the athletes were weighed in their football uniforms (as opposed to undressed), how would that impact the mean, median, midrange, range, variance, standard deviation, and inter-quartile range of the weights?
  5. If you converted the weights to kilograms, how would that impact the mean, median, midrange, range, variance, standard deviation, and inter-quartile range of the weights?
  6. What is the z-score of the heaviest player? the lightest player? the player with the median weight? At what percentile is the mean weight? What does this tell you about the shape of the distribution of weights?
  7. What fraction of the weights are within 1, 2, and 3 standard deviation units of the mean?
  8. Construct a box-and-whisker plot for these weights
  9. Display these weights with a histogram, why did you choose the class marks/boundaries you chose?
  10. Based on the histogram you constructed, what do you know about the mean and median of the weights?
  11. Which of the columns in your spreadsheet contain qualitative (categorical) variables versus quantitaive variables?
  12. Which of the categorical data in the roster could you group into fewer categories, how would you do it, and for which variables is it appropriate to do so?
