Notes and corrections to the Photoshop Creative Suite 5 tutorial on Extracting Images in PS CS 5. http://library.creativecow.net/articles/harrington_richard/ photoshop-cs5-extract/video-tutorial Looooooooooooooooooooooong URLs are inconvenient! Extracting a BEAR out from a background to create two layers: i. Bear layer, and ii. Background layer (without the bear). Why? So the separate layers can be controlled independently in Adobe After Effects. Similar too: Rock, Paper, Scissors lesson where we extracted just the Paper from the SNORG TEE shirts GIF file. 1. Quick Selection Tool - came out in CS 4, but much improved, more effective, easier to use, in PS CS 5. Note: Hold down the Alt key and the Quick Selection tool can be used to DESELECT or SUBTRACT from instead of add to the selection. 2. Refine the Edge. Painting to make adjustments was NOT covered during our class. Try it out yourself. 3. Output to: New Layer with Layer Mask From about 1:30 onward you can see this setting in the Refine Edge dialog box. Nowhere in the video does he mention that this is the setting you need to use, so be sure to notice that it is the setting he does use and it is the needed choice to achieve the Content Aware Fill later on. 4. "notice that it pulled it out and automatically masked it to its own layer" 02:30 5. 3D Motion Control: To do the 3D motion, you might want to EXPLODE the image into separate layers (for use in After Effects). 02:40 6. "So if I go ahead and load this selection" - Rich Harrington does NOT show the menu or command he used, he does NOT mention the keystroke shortcut combination. Load Selection is the 2nd to last command on the Select menu. Select menu > Load Selection command Which layer was selected when he did this command? I went back and tried it. The answer is that the Select > Load Selection is: Enabled when you have the top layer (the one with the MASK, the new layer with the Bear or with the Boulder) selected. Not available when you have the bottom layer, the background layer, selected. He does quickly show the switching from the top layer to the bottom layer before doing the Load Selection command. Or is it AFTER doing the Load Selection command that he switches from the top layer (the Bear layer with its MASK) to the Background layer, the bottom layer? 02:40 to 02:55 Note: It is AFTER doing the Load Selection command. ----- SHIFT+DELETE is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. USE SHIFT + F5 ------------ 7. Shift+Delete to bring up the Fill dialogue box. 03:00 in video ------------ HUGE MISTAKE!!! Edit menu > Fill command What is the shortcut? It is Shift + F5, NOT Shift + Delete key! ---------- 8. Content Aware fill is available in Photoshop CS 5. 9. Healing Brush to clean up any seems or bad edges. Note: Alt + Click is necessary first step before you can start to use the Healing Brush or the Spot Healing tool. Same for Clone Stamp tool. Clone Stamp tool could be used here too. If you have older version of Photoshop, you would need to use the CLONE STAMP tool to do it all. Content Aware Fill is not available in older versions of Photoshop. You would do it all with CLONE STAMP TOOL there. As stated above, the Quick Selection tool would NOT do as great a job in Creative Suite 4 as it does so easily using the Creative Suite 5 version of Photoshop either.
